First Warning Weather Day: Tornado watches issued in Central Florida

Central Florida residents are under a tornado watch until 9 a.m. Thursday, October 12, 2023, due to the potential for severe weather, including damaging winds and isolated tornadoes.

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Melbourne, Florida, issued the tornado watch for the following counties:

  • Flagler
  • Lake
  • Orange
  • Osceola
  • Polk
  • Seminole
  • Sumter
  • Volusia

The NWS is warning residents to be prepared for the possibility of severe weather and to have a plan in place in case of a tornado warning.

If a tornado warning is issued, residents should take the following steps:

  • Seek shelter immediately in a basement or interior room on the lowest level of a sturdy building.
  • Avoid windows and exterior walls.
  • Cover your head and neck with your arms or a blanket.
  • If you are in a car, pull over to the side of the road and get out of the car. Lie down in a ditch or other low-lying area and cover your head and neck with your arms or a blanket.

Residents should also monitor local weather conditions and be prepared to act quickly if a tornado warning is issued.

Here are some additional tips for staying safe during severe weather:

  • Have a battery-powered radio or television so you can stay informed of weather conditions.
  • Keep a flashlight and batteries on hand.
  • Secure loose objects around your home and yard.
  • Have a plan for where to go if a tornado warning is issued.
  • Talk to your family about your tornado safety plan.
